Deepfakes are no longer a gimmick: CEO fraud via video call, fake interviews, and manipulated evidence have moved from theory into everyday business.   • Eyes and blink patterns: Unnatural frequency, glassy stare, wrong reflections.
  • Mouth and tongue movement: Tongue and teeth detail remain hard for many models. A simple test: ask the person to stick out their tongue or smile into the camera.
  • Lighting and shadows: Face and background lit inconsistently.
  • Facial expressions and asymmetry: Halves of the face move out of sync; emotions look staged.
  • Hairline, ears, jewelry: Edges shimmer, earrings deform, glasses sit wrong.
  • Lip sync: Word endings and mouth closure don't line up.

Audio Detection Cues

  • Unnatural breathing or no breathing pauses at all.
  • Robotic prosody – every sentence sounds the same length and stress.
  • Background noise missing or mismatched to the claimed environment.
  • Odd reactions to interruptions (AI often responds with slight delay).

Organizational Countermeasures

  1. Second channel mandatory: Financial instructions are never confirmed by video or audio alone. A callback to the registered landline is the minimum.
  2. Code words for emergencies: For executives, finance, and HR – an agreed passphrase checked in any urgent communication.
  3. Four-eyes principle for payments: Especially for deviations from standard processes. Limits are not suggestions.
  4. Awareness training: Build real cases into the awareness program; involve executives.
  5. Technical support: Deepfake detection in video conferencing and incoming calls, verified digital signatures for official statements.
  6. Clear reporting path: Suspected manipulation is handled like a security incident – including documentation and forensic preservation.
